    four bible thumpers preaching about the end of the world in the middle of broad street downtown. it's hard to read, but the sign says "drunkenness is sin."

Well, the Bible was also written down when women were considered property. So who's to say that God doesn't consider people living together with a commitment to each other married (though it may not be legal in the eyes of the govt.)? And maybe you should get a sense of humor! :D

Actually, the scripture you're referencing basically draws a connection between men and Jesus and women and the church. While the church is subordinate to Christ, men should love their wives as He loved the church...in other words, a man should love his wife enough to gladly give his life for her's. As a woman I'm liking my end of that deal.
