Brand New:
Overseen in Athens

For years you've been watching your tongue so that what you say doesn't end up here. Now, you'll have to watch how you look. You never know who has a camera.

Here's the link

each class room will have a braille-enabled smart board by 2011

  • Professor: We are going to need a note taker for this class. If anyone is interested, see me after class.
  • Sorostitute 1: Why do we need notetakers?
  • Sorostitute 2: It's for the blind students because they can't see the screen.

Why do universities allow sororities and fraternities?

THe question is not why does the university allow greek life. the question is why does the university let in stupid people. there are plenty of smart people in the greek system just as there are plenty of stupid people outside of the greek system.

Good Lord, son. If you want to compare notes, we can. I "suck at life" because I find the Greek system ignorant, elitist, and arrogant?

You fail, my child. You fail.

Greeks have better GPAS because a. every sorostitute is an early childhood education major b. most (most) take easy easy majors and c. they HAVE TESTS BANKS. Get off your fratty high horse.

Don't bring Early Childhood into this. As a matter of fact, only 10% of my ECE cluster is greek. And don't EVEN attempt to say the major is easy. YOU try lesson planning and taking care of kids all day while your college peers are drinking until 2 and not waking up until 11. Get off your own high horse.

I used to tutor ed majors when I worked at a Writing Center at a different college--not UGA.

Those people were knuckle-dragging nimrods, mouth-breathing know-nothings who didn't know a preposition from a proposition.

Sadly, the Ed department is often the ghetto of a university. So, Fail. Try again little Ms. Rent-a-friend.

Thank you for being the only intelligent person at this site, apparently. I'd like to see half of you survive a day in a 5th grade classroom. You'd be surprised at how much time it actually takes to develop a meaningful lesson plan, even if it is based just on Red Rover (not sure if that's even a book). Oh, and good luck keeping your job when your underprivileged students don't pass the CRCT, despite your hours of work. Yeah, thanks.

And you'd be surprised at how difficult it is to both bus tables and wash dishes during a Friday dinner rush. Then a little shit kid throws spaghetti all over the floor b/c his parents think it's cute. It's not.

In response to points a & b- in my sorority of approx. 200 there are MAYBE 10 ECE majors, and a few more that will even admit they are only here for an MRS degree. However, wait about 10 years and see how many of the rest of us AND our fratty boyfriends are in charge of everything from your health care to your kids' educations, to defending your slander/libel suit in court, to making political policy that you live by.
As far as point c goes-my sorority (as well as several other Greek organizations that I know of) DOES NOT keep test banks. They are considered unethical. We DO keep study guides from previous semesters for alternate practice tests.
And before I get the inevitable typo comments- get off it. Like most Greeks I know I not only go to class, volunteer, and actively participate in campus activities, I work to pay for all of it on my own and still make time to enjoy the fleeting college years. Apparently every GDI here is an ENGL major...which is SO much more difficult than ECE...

Here's the thing: Greeks may be really smart people, I don't doubt that for a second. But when the majority of students overhear conversations like the one above, certain sterotypes start to emerge and they become reinforced.

If Greeks want respect and they want the stereotypes to be dropped, maybe they should start telling their members to watch what they say and do.

Just a thought.

there are just as many quotes on here labeled guy/girl. so maybe we should tell everyone to keep their mouths shut so people don't think UGA (not just the greesk system) is full of dumbasses.

The ECE GPA is high because IT IS EASY. My mom is a teacher. It is a very hard job, but as the busboy says.. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to do it. Your argument is faulty. Also, the Georgia education system is abysmal. Why don't you go into politics and fix it if you're so upset about those CRCTs.

Alot of times people are labeled as greek simply because they make a comment or look or act a certain way. There is no way of telling if the person is greek or not unless they are wearing something that says so. This is how the sterotypes continue.

About the comment that Greek's would erase stereotypes if they told members to watch what they say or do... I don't know about Fraternities but almost all sororities DO tell there members to watch what they say, especially when wearing they're letters because of sites like this one that typically stereotype greeks into one category, no matter which fraternity/sorority they're in. I've even heard of girls being called out on what they wear because it was too reveling. Even though some greek organizations try to control and change the stereotype it really doesn't matter because people will still judge them no matter what they do or say.

Why even have greeks in the first place? They're just organizations for those who can't grow up and realize that high school is over.

whoa - think pretty highly of yourself, don't you? You must be the most evolved, self-aware and independent student to ever set foot on a college campus. I am so sorry that up until now my very existence has caused you so much anguish.

yea they may party, they may also have test banks... but not every teacher uses the same test.

and in case your wondering no i didnt want to be one,its just not my thing. i just happen to know a lot of them

Think about it this way if I your friend was taking a class this semester that you planned on taking next semester would you not ask your friend to keep the notes and tests? This is basically test banks friends keeping materials for their friends.

Most teachers don't give tests back anyway or don't use the same test. It doesn't make it unfair anyone can do share with their friends.

I think when anonymous said 'fair' what they mean was 'ethical'. The question is 'Are you cheating when you use a test bank?'.

http://www.uga.edu/honesty/other/ex_summary.pdf

According to the pdf, "Getting questions and answers from someone who has already taken the test" is considered dishonest.

a. so many people are tagged as "fratty" in these posts because if you were a polo (or don't dress like a hippy) you are automatically assumed to be greek on this campus which is absurd.
b. I'll agree that the education major isn't that hard. however, i know a couple of people who were in the honors program and had all A's on core classes that were education majors so don't just assume they are dumb. Not to mention how easy some other majors at UGA are- i.e. HACE (also known as econ for 4th graders)
c. being in a greek organization is about more than "wishing you were still in high school." It's about being a part of something larger than yourself (yes, it is also about partying as well). this is why greeks are so highly involved in community service. It's basically like being on say Dance Marathon but you also have huge parties.
d. I'm not a greek. I can't afford the dues. however, I do have many friends that are and they treat me no differently because I can't afford it. they still invite me around, etc.

This whole Greek/non-Greek thing has to be the most ridiculous argument ever. UGA's a big school. You're big boys and girls. If you don't want to be involved in Greek life, you don't have to. If you want to go Greek, go Greek. Newsflash! There are no hard majors at UGA! If there were, the suicide rate wouldn't be so damn low. For a bunch of people supposedly oh so superior to the Greeks, I really don't get why fraternities and sororities are such a sore subject for so many non-Greeks. Sure some of them are douche bags, but there are douche bags all over UGA's campus. And once you get rid of the starving emo vegan chicks that are all bitches anyways, there's not a huge difference between Greek girls and non-Greek girls. Some of them are airheads, some of them are dumbasses, some of them are sluts, and some of them are really cool. You sound like a bunch of kids who don't realize that high school is over and won't shut up about how the cool kids really aren't that cool while really wishing you could be cool. As for the Greeks, quit with this whole "being in a fraternity is about being a part of something greater than yourself" thing. You found a house full of guys you like and so you hang out with them. Sometimes you do stuff together and make special t-shirts. Sometimes you have big parties. Sometimes you have small parties. Sometimes you have band parties. Sometimes you don't have any parties at all and just sit on your porch drinking beer with your friends. Some of you move into the house. Some don't. And with any luck, an alumnus will land you a sweet job when you graduate. Wahoo. You do some community service. So does every high school kid trying to get into college.
